Owned by Black & Decker, DeWalt is a huge company of more than 10,000 employees (and about 60,000 if we include all B&D companies). North 40 has been a proud DeWalt distributor for years and like many of the brands we carry, we get one big question from customers all the time: Are DeWalt tools made in the USA?
We addressed this same question for Carhartt a couple years ago and just like in that blog, the answer is both yes and no. Let’s take a few minutes to learn about DeWalt, what kind of tools they make, and finally answer the question of where they manufacture their wares.
DeWalt History
DeWalt tools has had a long history of innovation. Founded in 1923 by Raymond DeWalt in Leola, PA, DeWalt tools grew quickly and was purchased in 1947 by American Machine and Foundry Co. then in 1960 by Black & Decker. DeWalt had invented the radial arm saw which was used in most construction sites until the 1970’s and the introduction of the power miter saw. Before the radial arm saw, table and hand saw had to be used for cross cutting lumber. Over the years DeWalt has brought to market many more first offs and improved designs ranging from simple improvements to hand tools to high tech things like super tough Android powered smart phones for construction workers and their FlexVolt hybrid voltage battery packs that can switch power outputs based on real time tool needs.
What does DeWalt make today?
DeWalt makes power, hand, and pneumatic tools to cover basically any scenario you can imagine, but they have a specific goal for their tools as they are “relentlessly pursuing a cordless jobsite”. This can be most easily seen through their extensive cordless tool selection and big improvements in battery storage capacity along with more than 200 tools in their 20V Max line. This doesn’t even include the dozens of tools available with the FlexVolt line as well.
When your product must be made to survive construction sites year after year, your manufacturing must be even tougher! Most power tools come with a 3-year limited warranty, 1-year free service contract, and 90-day money back guarantee. Beyond this some pneumatic tools come with a 7-year warranty and most hand tools include a lifetime warranty. So, it is obvious that DeWalt believes in their products and are willing to back that up.
Where are DeWalt tools made?
Stanley Black & Decker is an enormous, publicly traded company with a market cap of over $13 billion. Like any big company they make their brands all over the world and that includes DeWalt tools. DeWalt has facilities in Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, Italy, Mexico, the UK, and yes… the United States of America. You can easily identify one of the USA made DeWalt tools by looking for the “Built in the USA with global materials” label. When DeWalt brought tool manufacturing back to the US in 2013 they had just one facility. Not ten years later and DeWalt operates 7 dedicated factories in the USA bringing the total Black & Decker US manufacturing locations to 48 across about a dozen different states! That is an impressive number and means that it is pretty easy to find DeWalt products of all sorts that are made in America.
