7 Steps to a Successful Wedding Day (and How to Work with Your Photographer)
Working the gimbal while filming a wedding.
Hey there, future newlyweds! Your wedding day is undoubtedly one of the most memorable and magical moments in your life. With all the excitement and emotions, it's important to ensure that every precious moment is captured beautifully by your photographer. In this blog post, I'll share seven essential steps for a successful wedding day, along with some practical tips on how to work seamlessly with your photographer (or videographer!). So, let's dive in and make your wedding day truly unforgettable!
Step 1: Plan Ahead
The key to a successful wedding day starts with careful planning. Begin by creating a detailed timeline, which includes all important events, such as the ceremony, reception, and specific photo opportunities. Discuss this timeline with your photographer well in advance, ensuring they have a clear understanding of your expectations. This way, they can prepare and allocate sufficient time for each moment without missing a beat. Both Megan Jean Photography and RolinWild Films include this service for free for all of our wonderful couples in every full-service package that we offer.
Step 2: Communication is Key
Open and clear communication with your photographer is essential. Share your vision, preferences, and any must-have shots you want to capture. Be sure to discuss the style of photography you prefer, whether it's candid, traditional, or a mix of both. A great photographer will listen attentively and offer their professional insights to make your vision a reality. Every photographer has their own style and limits so making sure that your vision works with theirs is a two-way street. Much like your honey and you, you gotta kinda “date” your photographer and make sure that you are a great fit for each other.
Step 3: Get to Know Your Photographer
Building a rapport with your photographer creates a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Schedule an engagement photoshoot or a meeting before the big day to get to know each other better. This will help you feel more at ease in front of the camera, allowing your true personalities to shine through in the photographs. Megan Jean Photography offers a free engagement shoot for every couple for this exact reason! Not only do we want you looking amazing for your invites, but we want to get to know you ahead of the big day as well. A private boudoir shoot is an excellent alternative.
Part of your search should include making sure that your vendors, photographers and otherwise, are using quality equipment. Now, having the top of the line gear is not what makes a good photographer, but it certainly allows them to work at the top of their game. More so, having professional level gear means that they are likely serious enough about your photos and have worked with enough other people that you can rest assured you will not be stiffed when it comes time to deliver! Checking their portfolio is a solid additional step as well.
Step 4: Scout the Location
If possible, visit the wedding venue with your photographer prior to the wedding day. This will help them identify the best spots for capturing stunning photographs. Share any specific locations or areas of the venue that hold special meaning to you, so your photographer can plan accordingly and capture those sentimental moments beautifully.
Step 5: Create a Shot List
Collaborate with your photographer on creating a shot list for the day. Include a mix of formal portraits, candid moments, and any unique shots you desire. While it's great to have a list, remember to give your photographer the freedom to capture spontaneous moments too. The blend of planned and unplanned shots will tell a beautiful story of your wedding day. Shot lists can range anywhere from extremely specific (I want a picture with Aunt Phyllis and Uncle Joe, but NOT with Ms. Needle the neighbor who I didn’t want to invite) to the very vague (family maybe… IDK?). Most of the time it ends up somewhere in the middle, but as long as we communicate well it will go great!
Step 6: Delegate a Photo Wrangler
On the big day, designate a trusted friend or family member as a "photo wrangler." This person can assist your photographer by gathering family members for group photos, ensuring everyone is present when needed. Having a photo wrangler allows your photographer to focus on capturing breathtaking shots while someone else takes care of the logistics. Megan usually has me do this if I’m there so an alternative is a 2nd shooter. This has the added benefit of being able to be in two places at once (like if thew couple gets ready at the same time in two different locations) as well as better chances of getting those once in a lifetime shots!
Step 7: Relax and Enjoy
Last but not least, remember to relax and enjoy your wedding day! Trust that your photographer will capture all the special moments, leaving you to fully immerse yourself in the joy and celebration. A relaxed and happy couple makes for stunning photographs, so be present in the moment and let your love shine through.
And that’s it! A successful wedding day is a combination of meticulous planning, open communication, and a talented photographer who understands your vision. By following these seven steps, you'll ensure your special day is beautifully captured, allowing you to relive those precious moments for years to come. So, embrace the journey, work harmoniously with your photographer, and savor every second of your wedding day. Cheers to a lifetime of love and unforgettable memories!
